Sometimes clients ask me, "What can I do to help YOU out?", and let me tell you, we LOVE to hear that! SO...I figured I would make a list for everyone out there who gets their pictures taken how they can quickly become any photographer's dream.
1. I know this sounds obvious, but LOOK YOUR BEST!
And I will tell you what I mean by that: Take the time to make your hair nice, do your make up (if you wear make up) and paint your nails a fun color, or if you are a guy, PLEASE shave or groom your facial hair THAT DAY!! It will make my life easier and you will look so much more crisp in your photos! Wear an outfit that is flattering from EVERY angle and that makes you feel CONFIDENT! Let me tell you, when you take the TIME to get yourself ready, pick out a sharp outfit and fix your hair, your images will reflect that good feeling you have about yourself!!!
2. Have a GREAT ATTITUDE!
Great camera equipment and perfect lighting cannot cover up someone who doesn't want to be there, so whatever it takes to be in the best mood possible, you should try. There is nothing better than photographing clients who are excited to be there and looking forward to the images they will get! When you look at your pictures, you want to remember having a great time! An obvious but an often neglected way to ensure a good attitude is making sure you eat something before you come (as long as you don't go into a food coma lol) When clients are willing to try new poses and be their (happy & confident) selves, you end up with really great GENUINE images! So, be silly, be sweet, be confident, HAVE FUN! It doesn't have to be painful! If there is anything your photographer can do to make it easier for you, PLEASE tell us! We want you to feel good!
3. BE YOURSELF!
If you are a more reserved and calm person, you don't have to act like you're a diva lol. If you have inside jokes or cute things you do with your family (special handshakes anyone?!) than show us! It will loosen you up and give you a more fun experience! Even if my client is a young kid, if they can say to me (or I can tell) they aren't into a prop or a pose, I always say, "That's ok, we don't have to do that" There is no sense in having a picture of you not looking like yourself! Don't be afraid to NOT SMILE in every picture, not that you have to make an angry face, it's just you don't have to plaster a smile on for EVERY shot, not many people are that naturally smiley :) Even if it isn't a typical glam shot, don't be afraid to suggest your ideas to your photographer, I am sure we will do our best to work with you!
4. LOCATION & SETTING are sooo important!
A location can make or break a shoot. Yes, a good photographer can improvise with what we have, but it is soo great when we can meet at a great spot! If we are shooting in your house, tidy up anything that would clutter the image, it really makes a difference! Also, if you have any props, especially for the little ones, it is enormously helpful and makes the shoot really fun! Awesome jewelry, hair bows, a fun skirt, a sentimental object, all of these things can enhance a shoot!
5. COMMUNICATE with your Photographer!
Do your research and look at their work, is there anything about their style that you don't like? Do you like the way they crop their images, edit their color, the poses they take? Have you seen anything online or somewhere else that you would like your photographer to try? i.e. Are you uncomfortable showing your belly in your maternity session? TELL US! Is there anything you want to MAKE SURE you get done? We don't know what is important to you unless you TELL US!
