Modeling School Part 3- Common Mistakes & Easy Fixes

So what else do I have in store for you this week? This weeks theme is common mistakes and easy ways to improve your looks! it is the last of the advice I have in this series. Without further ado I will get right to it!

Some people suggest that you talk to your photographer in order to relax yourself, which is a  good AND bad idea, and here is why: It is great to talk to feel comfortable, BUT when you are talking WHILE they are shooting, you are always going to end up making an odd face. It is so easy to do this when trying to get your spouse or your kid to smile or laugh, but resist the urge to talk and find a non-verbal way to communicate!

Another common mistake you can make is trying to make what I call a "model face". When you see those stern looks in the magazine, you think, wow, they look so edgy, I want to look like that! But here is the problem, those models have practiced for hours to make that face. BOTTOM LINE- this look can make you look angry, not stylish, leave it to the pros! The shot on the right is my solution to this problem. You still look pensive but notice how much more alive the eyes look! Beautiful!

2 EASY fixes you can master INSTANTLY!

1. Stand up or sit up straight! It makes a world of difference!

2. When posing, keep your weight on your leg that is furthest from the camera, this gives you a more slender look (and who doesn't want that!?)

You think it is funny, but SO many of us slump all day and we carry that posture into our pictures!

For ME, this is my favorite posing trick because for so many years, I HATED how my arms looked in pictures (not to mention real life!) but I am here to say NO MORE!!! By simply adjusting your arm to be slightly away from your body you instantly loose THREE INCHES of unwanted arm!  This same idea applies when you are standing too, it doesn't have to be very far from your body, just enough (as always you can practice in the mirror).

My last and final advice is to EVERYONE is to make sure you are not hungry before pictures; adults and children alike (including myself) get very cranky when they are hungry! It doesn't hurt to pack a small snack when going to a shoot!
